According to Custodial Mothers and Fathers and Their Child Support: 2007, released by the U.S. Census Bureau in November, 2009, there are approximately 13.7 million single parents in the United States today, and those parents are responsible for raising 21.8 million children (approximately 26% of children under 21 in the U.S. today).
Additional research states that the approximately 84% of custodial parents are single mothers, versus the 16% of custodial parents that are fathers.
Faced with these undeniable statistics, DAUGHTERS OF ZION recognizes the rise in young women with children with little or no support system, providing much needed assistance so that their children are not left home alone, vulnerable, and without adequate supervision. DOZ recognizes that oft times single parents are faced with the uneasy choice of leaving their children home alone because of daycare costs or transportation.
